MARSHALL -- Turkey Run is the team to beat this season in the Wabash River Conference after last season's come-from-nowhere conference upset. This season North Vermillion (3-3) made it one of their goals to defeat the Warriors, but in their second season meeting Nov. 25, the Falcons fell short and lost 53-31.

Turkey Run (4-1) got off to a great start, opening the game with two of the Francis triplets, Adrianne and Chelsea, both scoring on fast-break lay-ups. Another A. Francis basket down low was followed by a pair of Meghan Doss 3-pointers that came within 30 seconds of each other.

Finally, with 2:30 left in the first quarter, North Vermillion's junior Hillary Lively drained the team's first field goal. The Falcons' defense picked up and held the Warriors for the next two minutes, also gaining another Lively score. At the first quarter buzzer, Doss drained her third 3-pointer of the game.

Turkey Run led 15-4 at the start of the second quarter.

The second quarter started out a bit more promising for the Falcons as junior Taylor Poynter scored her two points of the night right off the start.

The Falcons held the Warriors to two points for the first three minutes of the quarter, but with 4:25 to play, Doss struck again for another three. Less than a minute later, sophomore teammate Jordan Hunt drained her first three of the night. North Vermillion responded with a field goal from senior Derryn Axtell.

Despite a tougher Falcons defense, the Warriors still led the quarter scoring 8-5 for a halftime score of 23-9.

The Warriors entered the second half determined to hold off any more Doss points. But once the 5'2" Doss was no longer open outside of the three-point line, she started driving on players eight and ten inches taller than she, drawing a foul almost every time. Her first drive led to an and-one basket for three points, bringing the score to 26-15 with 4:12 left in the third.

The second half grew much more physical than the first half, in which each team only committed three fouls. With three minutes left in the third, North Vermillion was in bonus.

With more aggression came more scoring on both sides of the court. Lively took over by scoring on a great post up, followed by Hunt on the opposite side of the floor. Lively grabbed another field goal, and the trend continued through the end of the third for a 32-20 Turkey Run lead.

Both teams were in bonus a minute into the fourth quarter. A. Francis scored three on an and-one right off the bat. Doss continued driving, and was fouled almost every time, leading to five free-throw points in the fourth.

Lively's post moves were almost unstoppable in the fourth, but her efforts alone were not enough. Both teams moved into double bonus, and Turkey Run let off the fouls. North Vermillion couldn't stop and free throws ultimately hurt the Falcons in the fourth quarter of the game. A couple of Turkey Run steals, including one by Doss that led to two points, also stifled the Falcons.

Ironically, the battle for top scorer was between the shortest player on the floor and one of the tallest, as Doss led the game's scoring with 22 points, followed closely by 5'10" Lively with 21.

Also leading the scoring for Turkey Run were A. Francis and Hunt, who each added nine for the night. C. Francis tallied six points and sophomore Shelby Davis scored four.

North Vermillion's remaining 10 points came from Axtell (5), sophomore Bethany Chew (3) and Poynter (2).

North Vermillion will next travel to Seeger (3-2) Dec. 2.

Turkey Run will play host to Southmont (1-3) Dec. 4.
