– What a game it was Feb. 19 in Lafayette! Class 4A third-ranked Carmel
hit the road to face 1A No. 4 Lafayette Central Catholic and, unlike
that “other game” in Bloomington, this time the team from Lafayette
prevailed as the host Knights handed Carmel its second loss of the
season, 86-75.
With Carmel coming in as a heavy favorite, you
might have been mildly surprised to find that the Knights were leading
18-12 after one period of play. The second quarter seemed to return
things to normal as the Greyhounds climbed on top, 34-31, at halftime.
Now,
the second half was a totally different ballgame. Whatever the coaches
said to their teams at the half must have been good to give the crowd
such an awesome game.
A hectic third quarter came to a close
with the Knights retaking the lead at 49-48. And then … the
magnificently paced fourth quarter.
A total of 64 points were
put on the board in the final stanza and, when the smoke cleared,
Central Catholic had posted a shocking 11-point upset. The Knights were
led by Dru Anthrop’s game-high 25 points, while Daniel Mills added 23
for Central Catholic (15-5), which will host Carroll (Flora) Feb. 22 in
its final regular-season contest.
For the Greyhounds, who
suffered their second loss in three games after winning their first 16,
Daniel Moore was high with 23 points while Charlie Hansen added 16.
Carmel wraps its pre-sectional slate Feb. 22 at home vs. Brebeuf.
