BW Girls Hoops Coach Thompson Resigns

Falcon Coach Steps Down To Spend More Time With Family

Published: 09/10/2008

Ashburn (Sept. 9, 2008) - Briar Woods High School girls basketball Coach Ben Thompson confirmed Thursday that he has resigned from the Falcon Program.

Thompson, the school's first and only girls basketball coach, informed the school last week of his decision citing the need to spend more time with his family. Thompson and his wife recently celebrated the birth of a baby girl.

In the first two seasons under Thompson the new school took its share of lumps with a 9-36 mark and mostly freshmen and sophomores but in 2007-08 the Falcons went 15-9 and earned a AA Dulles District quarterfinal homecourt berth with a fourth place finish in the regular season.

Thompson said it was a tough decision, but he felt like it wasn't fair to his players if he couldn't put in as much time as needed in the program.

There is no word on a timetable to replace Thompson. The Falcons do have a high-profile assistant coach in Gary Hall. The former long-time Herndon High School boys coach, Hall joined Thompson after stepping down from the Hornets position. Hall's twin daughters play for Briar Woods.
