TERRE HAUTE Terre Haute South remained undefeated in all high school boys golf matches Saturday by the narrowest of margins.

The Braves and Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rival North Central of Marion County each shot 310 at Rea Park in changing conditions as the tournament went off on schedule in spite of threatening weather conditions in the morning.

South claimed the championship with its fifth score — an 81 by Phillip Myers, four shots better than his NC counterpart.

Coach Chris Cassell’s team now is 2-0 in tournaments and 4-0 in dual matches. The Braves will face Greencastle at Rea Park on Monday.

Terre Haute South’s Red team shot 326 to tie Turkey Run for third and also garnered the better team finish with its fifth score.

“I am really pleased with the Red team’s finish. I tell our players that every shot counts and that was true twice for us today,” said the coach.

Greencastle carded 327 for fifth and South Vermillion had 338 for sixth.

The Braves had four players under 80 in the competition. North Central had three under 80 with Sean Jones shooting a 1-over-par 73 for medalist honors.

Jones competed in the state a year ago with his team and advanced to the second day of the competition. He said the 73 matched his best 18-hole score as he went 34-39 in his round.

He said his iron play was a strong point in Saturday’s round, which was concluded in chilly weather with a light rain falling at times in the final 90 minutes of play.

“I am going to Marion College to play golf,” said the senior.

North Central has four players back from the team that played in the state but was without one senior Saturday. Leo Hodes is the NC coach.

He said the Panthers have played in one other tournament this year, competing at Prestwick in the Avon Invitational in lousy weather.

“Today was not that bad,” he said.

South’s Ian White was second low with 76. Zach Hosking of South, Tom Wortman of North Central and Jason Millikan of Turkey Run tied for third, each with 77.

Wade Huber paced Greencastle with 78. Clint Baldwin of South and Jordan Lowry of South Vermillion had the same scores and Thomas Goss rounded out South scoring with 79.

Evan Miller of West Vigo, John Callahan of Terre Haute North and Brandon Bekkering each had 80. Miller took an 8 on No. 14 after shooting 37 on the front nine.

Terre Haute North had its regular lineup on the course for the first time but Jurgen Sinn was forced to withdraw because of a sore back.

“He hurt it working this summer and it has been bothering him,” said North coach Chuck Payne.

The Patriots are at Sullivan on Monday and West Vigo faces Linton at Rea Park on Tuesday.

The first round of a men’s tournament was played prior to the high school match. Veteran players said the course was in good shape.
