by Blair MorseSpecial to DigitalSportsTiny Eastern Shore school Pocomoke won its fourth straight 1A boys’ soccer state championship, and fifth in six years behind two goals from Jordan Becker in a 3-1 victory over Boonsboro at UMBC on Friday.
Sam Byrd put his corner kick in the net and assisted on both of Becker’s goals. The Warriors (9-7) scored all three goals on set pieces.
“The best thing I can say is that we won,” Pocomoke coach Alan Byrd said. “We’re happy with the performance. We had a brief letdown at the beginning of the game that got everybody excited, but these boys have been through quite a bit this season, so being down one goal is not anything to be concerned about.”
It was the eighth state championship for Coach Byrd.
The Warriors fell behind on an own goal just 7:15 into the game, but scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half on Sam Byrd’s corner.
Defender Kevin Nguyen continued his playoff run of marking the top scorers from each of the Warriors’ opponents, shutting down Boonsboro’s 25-goal scorer Shane Lowery.
“Like coach said, if I couldn’t do it, he wouldn’t let me do it,” Nguyen said. “I trust my coach and I just poured my heart out into it.”
