For three and a half quarters, Glenelg
Country School stood toe to toe with MIAA A Conference power, Mount St. Joseph. In the end, however, the Gaels prevailed, 71-59, to move to 4-0 on the season.
After falling behind 23-15 at the end of the
first quarter, Glenelg rallied and outscored St. Joe 16-10 in the second
quarter to cut the lead to two points at the half.
The Gaels were able to extend the lead in the
third, to as many as ten points, but the Dragons fought valiantly and cut their deficit to five points at numerous times in the fourth quarter. Forced to foul in final two minutes of the
game, the Dragons were ultimately bested by 12 points last night in
Ellicott City. St. Joe was led by junior
guard Eric Atkins, who led all scorers with 28 points. Atkins went 13-for-13 from the line in the fourth
quarter to seal the victory for the Gaels.
Glenelg Country was led by junior guards Justin Johnson and Brian Gibbons. Johnson, who was guarded by Atkins all night,
poured in 19 points using an array of dribble moves to get to the rim. Gibbons, a threat to score from beyond the
arc, hit four three-pointers and ended with 16 points. Gibbons had the challenging task of guarding
Atkins all night, and limited him to only six field goals.
St. Joe’s big men battled foul trouble throughout the game, but Gerald Hill and Riley Beaumont were able to combine for 19
points. Glenelg’s center, Anyars Salih,
played a great game, scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds.
