The CAL 7th grade baseball team improved their record to 6-4 this week. A big win against Barret has them poised for a 2 seed in the tournament next weekend.
Barret kept CAL scoreless in the top of the first and then took the early lead putting up three runs in the bottom half. With two outs in the top of the second, Austin Kurnick got things going with a shot to the third baseman, forcing an error. Parker Hobbs then hit a rocket in the left center gap for a double. Sam Stone singled scoring Kurnick and then stole second. Spencer Swift then banged a single to right scoring both Hobbs and Stone. Matthew Weiss threw seven pitches to retire Barrett three up, three down in the bottom half with the score tied 3-3.
To lead off the top of the third, Steve Bidwell took a fastball to the side to reach first base. After two quick outs, the rally started again. Drew Shadburne drew a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Austin Kurnick then hit a rope to center scoring both Bidwell and Shadburne. Parker Hobbs singled, followed by another single by Sam Stone scoring Kurnick. Spencer Swift drew a walk and then the rally stalled leaving two on base, but pushing the score to 6-3 CAL.
Barret wasn’t going to give up. They chipped away at the lead scoring one in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth. With the score 6-5 and CAL batting in the top of the sixth, Spencer Swift lead off with a walk, followed by another walk to Sawyer Hobbs. After a fielder’s choice, Hobbs stole third and Josh Frederick sacrificed him in to provide a little breathing room for CAL. Four batters later in the bottom of the sixth, the game was over, CAL 7 – Barret 5.
Matthew Weiss picked up the win with an outstanding performance. Pitching a complete game, he only allowed six hits against a very good Barret team.
CAL has two make up games this week and then plays in the tournament on Saturday.
