The middle school track and field team participated in the Kentucky Country Day Invitational meet on Friday, May 9th along with thirteen other teams. It was a tough meet as we ran against historically competitive teams such as North Oldham, Oldham and East Oldham. The weather was cool and overcast as the meet began but deteriorated to cold and windy with rain as the day wore on. Our athletes toughed it out in difficult conditions to turn in an outstanding team effort. Several of our athletes competed in events for the first time this season. Our eighth graders all showed up to participate despite having just returned from an exciting but very tiring trip to Washington, D.C. After running without them Tuesday against Oldham County we were so glad to have them all back to make our team effort complete.
Reagan Jones had a super day finishing third in the shot-put (28’6”) and fourth (57’5”) in the discus. We have almost come to take her outstanding performances for granted. Reagan also competes at high school level for us and appears to be on the fast track to an athletic scholarship. Awesome job Reagan!! Amanda Hegstad was a trooper as she competed in the discus for the first time ever! Thanks Amanda for being such a team player. Amanda has show marked improvement in her track events with Coach Wallace noting how well her running stride has developed this year. Erika Busse finished fourth in the long jump with a 12’-9”. Megan Laffoon placed fourth in the high jump with a 4' 2". Madison Evans had a 4' 0" and Sarah DeVries had a 3' 10". Way to jump girls! Sixth grader Peyton Griffee turned in an impressive performance in the discus for an overall sixth place finish! The competition will have to be on their toes as he continues to improve and still has his seventh and eighth grade years ahead of him. In the boys high jump Zack Dannelly finished with a 4’-6” and Luke Burge with a 4’4”. Blake Chelf turned in a 13’-6” in the long jump. Great job guys!
Sarah Burnett placed third in the long jump (13’-0”) and also competes for both our middle school and high school teams. Sarah’s dedication showed as she toughed it out to run the last event of the evening, the 4 X 400, after running the 1600. Sarah ran the anchor leg of the girls 4 X 400 (Erika Busse, Shannon Kenny, Andi Moser and Sarah Burnett) and blistered the competition to hold onto the teams silver medal and a team best time of 4:53.1. Very impressive ladies!! Sarah Burnett also broke the six minute mark in the 1600 to take the bronze medal with a smoking run of 5:59 against very tough competition. Sarah Arnold ran the 1600 and turned in a very respectable time of 7:09, just off her personal best of 7:03. Her commitment to the team shows with her steady and outstanding improvement all year long. Hannah Franke captured a silver medal in the 100 Hurdles with her personal best time of 17.62. Very impressive Hannah!! Hayley Hamman took the bronze medal in the 100 hurdles with a super time of 19:58. You rock Hayley!! Sixth graders Erin Coffee and Lydia Anvar were very nervous as they competed in the 400 for the first time this season. Erin ran second in her JV heat for most of the race and ended up with a close third place finish. See Erin, we told you so!! Lydia also turned in an impressive performance against tough competition. Way to go Lydia! The girls 4 X 100 (58:04) and 4 X 200 (2:02) relays (Hayley Hamman, Erika Busse, Sydni Cambpell and Shelby Norris) left the competition in the dust to win a silver and a gold. The girls 4 X 800 (Shannon Kenny, Lauren Rosenfoss, Tessa Sipe and Alli Lawson) finished fourth in a tough field. Outstanding job ladies, you make us proud!!
The boy’s relays were impressive against very tough competition. The 4 X 200 relay (Zack Dannelly, Ryan Dixon, Blake Chelf and Andrew Burns) was awesome with a time of 1:51 earning the bronze medal. Great job guys!! Zack Dannelly left smoke on the track as he finished his leg of the boys 4 X 800 to overcome the competition. What made that guy think he could beat you Zack, no way!! The 4 X 800 team (Connor Shyrek, Zack Dannelly, Hayden Hickey and Blake Chelf) took fourth running against an extremely tough field. Ryan Dixon was stellar in the 200 against tough competition, capturing fourth place with a time of 27:51. Ryan competes in both the middle and high school track meets. Fortunately he plans to remain at CAL for high school so we can benefit from his talent for a number of years to come. Connor Sheryak was brilliant in his 1600 (5:15) and 800 (2:32) runs. He is another athlete whom we have come to take for granted with his steady and constant dedication to the team. Connor always giving his utmost personal best and is already so talented!! We will no doubt see his name in print even more frequently as he continues to develop. Andrew Burns finished fourth in the 400 among a group of talented runners. Way to run Andrew!
