It was an exciting day at the 2008 Kentucky State Tennis Championship Saturday. Senior Colby Buchanan and freshman Brett Johnson upset Elliott Farmer and Will Palmer of Henry Clay 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to claim the Kentucky boys state doubles championship. Earlier that day, they defeated Dylan Gerlach and Ben Newstadt 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 for the opportunity to meet the top seeded Henry Clay team.
Colby and Brett played aggressively by taking control of the net and playing with determination. Assistant Coach Jeff Knott was quoted in saying, "(Farmer and Palmer) are great players, but we won in straight sets. It was a decisive victory. The difference was that we got our first serves in and we were aggressive."
Bradley Johnson won his first two singles matches at the state championship before losing to third seeded Richard Canelas of Highlands. The combined total of eight victories by the CAL boys earned a tie with St. and a fourth place trophy.
