CAL Baseball Going to State!

 

The Centurion Varsity Squad defeated Central Hardin in a best of three game series winning game one in dramatic fashion 7-6 and game two 5-3. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Centurion’s as they advance on to the State Championship Round where they will face the #4 ranked Apollo High School Eagles Thursday at Applebee’s Park in Lexington, KY. Game time is set for 12:30 PM.

Game 1 Wednesday, June 4, 2008

With the semi-state tournament being played at Male High School, Central Hardin jumped on the board in the top of the 1st inning when Andrew Stein hit a 2-run homer off of CAL starting pitcher Andy Wood. In the bottom of the 1st CAL struck back big and took the lead 3-2 on singles by Travis Shutt and Nick Jackson followed by a towering 3-run homer by right fielder Merritt Mowery. CAL took a 4-2 lead in the 2nd inning when Tim Anderson scored.  Cal committed two fielding errors in the 4th inning which led to Central Hardin scoring three unearned runs to take a 5-4 lead and in the 6th inning Central Hardin scored what looked to be an insurance run to take a 6-4 lead. Central Hardin’s starting pitcher Joe Nash sporting a 10-1 record and surrendering just one earned run through 62 innings found his rhythm and cruised through the next four innings. But this team has refused to give in at any point during its tournament run…

 

In the bottom of the 7th inning Davis Rhodes sitting on a 0-2 count fouled off three more pitches before reaching safely on a base hit. Chris Kinney reached on a fielder’s choice then Travis Shutt struck out. With Nick Jackson up at the plate he as hit in the head on a 1-0 fastball. Now with two runners on Andy Wood stepped to the plate and with two outs and a 1-2 count delivered a 2-run double to the left centerfield gap to tie the game 6 all. Mowery was intentionally walked and Neal Straton reached on an infield hit. Tim Anderson stepped to the plate and on another 1-2 count, Anderson singled to right field scoring Wood from 3rd to win the game.

Game 2 Thursday, June 5, 2008

Neil Freibert (4.1 innings, 2R, 3H, 1SO) took to the mound for CAL on what proved to be a tremendous win for the Centurions. With a crowd of over 1,000 watching on CAL scored first in the 2nd inning. Tim Anderson singled and stole 2nd base. Anderson stole 3rd base and scored on the catchers overthrow to the bag. Central Hardin tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third. In the 5th inning CAL scored 3 runs to stretch its lead 4-1. Neal Straton led off with a single; Tim Anderson and Davis Rhodes each reached safely on two misplayed balls. Matt Carter came in to pinch run for Rhodes.

Chris Kinney was due for a big hit and delivered on a 3-1 count hitting a drive over the center fielders head for a 3-run triple.       

 

Matt Meredith came in relief for Freibert in the 5th inning but made things interesting in the bottom of the 7th where he walked the first two batters before settling down. Central Hardin was able to push one run across but it wasn’t enough as CAL defeated Central Hardin 5-3 to advance on to the state tournament in Lexington next week.

Andy Wood – Pitched 5 innings plus scored 2 runs, 2 hits and 2 RBI’s 

Matt Meredith (MVP) – Picked up the win in game one and a save in game 2 in relief
