RADNOR - The 2008 Baseball Patriots returned to their friendly home confines and started the league season on a winning note. An enthusiastic crowd braved the blustery conditions to welcome this year's club, and they enjoyed a thorough home style victory. Junior DH Neil Gilman clubbed a grand slam in the third inning to put the Pats ahead to stay while Senior lefthander Andrew Candelore mystified the Lancers' lumber en route to his first complete-game victory this season. Some shotty defense by the Patriots led to an early defecit as the Royal Lancers bunched together all five of their runs in the first three frames. Junior leadoff hitter/centerfielder Nick Szalejko and Senior SS/team captain Tim Weglicki served as catalysts for a Patriot offense that pounded out nine hits. Szalejko and Weglicki combined to score six runs and steal five bases. Senior LF Jared Tuwalski's 2-run triple in the first inning sparked the rally. Pinch hitter, Junior Victor Stitz, smacked a solo blast in the sixth inning to put the mercy rule into effect - Carroll 15 McDevitt 5.
