In just its third season, Clarksburg has already become major player in Montgomery County softball -- especially considering its 2A status.

But if Monday's tilt proved anything it's that the Coyotes still have a bit of catching up to do to longtime softball giant Damascus.

The visiting Hornets topped Clarksburg, 5-0, in a battle of the two programs behind solid pitching and hitting.

Damascus (4-0) has reached the 3A state semifinals three of the past four years. Clarksburg (2-1) brought back seven starters from last year's team that went 17-2.

Covenant Life transfer pitcher Megan Alexander gave up just four hits while striking out nine. At the plate, Colleen Berringer went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, shortstop Taylor Wyatt went 2-for-3 with a double and Katie Denell was 2-for-4 with a double.

Clarksburg's Taleen Doukmajian collected three of the Coyotes' four hits. Junior pitcher Riley Wilson surrendered 11 hits with five strikeouts.
