After a tough loss to Walt Whitman on Friday, Magruder hockey coach Jeff Freel told his team how they could turn things around.
“We came out really flat and we got pretty well beaten up by Whitman but I told the guys they needed to come out quick and fast tonight,” said Jeff Freel. “They learned a good lesson Friday. They really got behind early and didn’t stay with the guys and I told the guys you have to take advantage of situations.”
His team took that advice to heart as they scored three goals in the first six minutes of their game against Northwest (5-5) on Monday and they kept pace after that for a 4-1 victory.
Center Jon Freel started the scoring less than five minutes in when he tapped in a cross-ice pass from winger Tyler Anderson. Then 24 seconds later, Yuriy Fuksenko scored off a pass from Andrew Opiela.
Finally just over a minute later, Anderson scored shorthanded to give the Colonels (6-2) an impressive start and a lead that was too large to overcome.
“We had that tough loss on Friday so we were really motivated to get back on a winning streak,” said Jon Freel.
Five minutes after Magruder established their early lead, Northwest chipped away with a goal from Mike Greene when he shot in a rebound to make the score 3-1.
Halfway into the second period Freel set up Anderson to return the lead to three goals. After that the Colonels relied on goalie Alex Cole to secure the win as he recorded 28 saves.
“If we don’t win this game, we have a couple of tough games and another loss makes the playoffs a real tough stretch so we need to win all the games we can,” said Anderson.
Goalie Paolo Zanello made 28 saves for Northwest and winger Liam MacWilliamson had a breakaway opportunity hit Cole’s shoulder and two posts before bouncing to the boards.
