After splitting games earlier this year and sharing the regular eason crown, it was only fitting that Elizabeth Seton and Holy Cross would meet in the WCAC championship Saturday evening at the University of Maryland.
Just over three minutes into regulation it was Seton that struck first on a goal by Caitlin Walls, but it was Holy Cross' speed that would prove to be too much for the Roadrunners. Holy Cross scoring four unanswered goals after the early-deficit to defeat Seton, 4-1, and capture the WCAC tournament championship.
"It feels great," said Tartans' Coach Candy Thurman, who was coaching in her fourth consecutive WCAC title game -- also winning in 2006. "They came right out with a beautiful goal but I was so proud of how we came back."
A minute and a half after Connollys' goal Katie Slater took a pass off the stick of Casey Fletcher and found the back of the box to knott the game at 1. From here Holy Cross didnt miss a beat, as senior Hayley Katzenberger scored back-to-back goals to give the Tartans a two-goal lead at the intermission. Fletcher assisted on Katzenbergers second goal.
Junior Katie Cacere scored the games' final goal on an assist from senior Carley Sullivan -- and the celebration began.
As the public address announcer counted down from 10, the Holy Cross players, dressed in their purple jerseys, joined him on the sideline, screaming loudly before storming the field for the traditional "pile up" when the clock finally reached zero. In the middle of that pile was freshman goalie Jillian Genovese, who recorded four saves on the day.
"Its' awesome, I am so excited right now," Katzenberger said. "Going back to school is going to be great. Our school gives huge support to the field hockey team. I cant wait to go back, everyone is going to be so excited."
