Calvert Hall hangs with St. Frances, but ultimately cedes Panther coach William Wells his 500th victory, 58-52.

Sean Mosley had 19 points, with seven coming in the fourth quarter, as St. Frances defeated Calvert Hall, 58-52, in Towson on Sunday, as Coach William Wells recorded his 500th career coaching victory since arriving at St. Frances.

"I'm glad the pressure is off," said an emotional Wells after the game.  "It's hard to describe.  Everyone worked very hard and I had a lot of help". I've very relieved, and I feel good for all of the players who have been part of this."

The 500 wins include victories on the varsity and junior varsity levels, as well as seven years with the Panthers' youth program.

Mosley said, "It's been a great ride.  I was with him when he got number 400, and I'm very proud of him."

Assistant coach Mark Karcher, who was a big part of a 33 win season in1996, as well as a 31 win season in 1997, said, "This is a very big day for us.  Coach Wells means so much to me and my family, it's great to be around and enjoy this moment."

Calvert Hall's first year Coach John Bauersfeld, whose team played a great game Sunday said, "That's a great accomplishment.  Not  many people ever achieve 500 wins.  He deserves it; he's done a great job at that school."

On the game itself, Bauersfeld said, "We left everything out there on the floor today.  We played very hard and we're getting better.  We hustled all the way.  A couple balls just didn't bounce our way and we missed a couple shots down the stretch, but we had good execution."

The Cardinals were led by Jonathan Graham, who had 23 points, including 10 in the second quarter. The game was tied at the half, 30-30, and Calvert Hall had the lead, 45-43, at the
end of three quarters. The Panthers held them to just seven points in the fourth quarter, but the Hall hung in, trailing by just two with two minutes left.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they were forced to foul Mosley, who converted five-of-six free throws in the final stanza.

Graham, who gets better by the game, was pleased with his team's performance.

"It's a challenge to play against Sean [Mosley]," said Graham.  "We played today with a lot of heart, and a lot of confidence.  We're improving."
