In basketball, good things usually happen when turnovers are kept to minimium. In the third quarter of its boys' basketball game with Severn School Wednesday evening, Calvert Hall College discovered the flip side.

The Cardinals were able to recover, rallying for a 64-56 victory over Admirals in a MIAA non-conference match in Towson. Sophomore center/forward Jonathan Graham led all scorers with 23 points and 11 rebounds for Calvert Hall (9-8). Sophomore guard Andrew Adams scored 16 points to lead Severn (8-5), and junior guard Alex Testaff added 12.

The Cardinals outscored the Admirals, 12-3, over the final two minutes of regulation to secure their season-best third consecutive victory. Calvert Hall first-year John Bauersfeld said his team has shown progress since returning from the Lions Club Christmas Tournament in Salisbury during the holiday break.

"We played St. Frances tough, T.C. [Towson Catholic] got away from us, but we hung with them for a while," said Bauersfeld, whose team followed close losses to No. 5 St. Frances (58-52) and No. 13 John Carroll (54-51) with victories over McDonogh School and Cardinal Gibbons. "We got a long way to go as tonight showed."

Thanks to a third quarter which they committed seven of their 10 turnovers, the Cardinals trailed by six points early in the fourth quarter, but Nate Greene came to life. The senior guard ran off six straight points, ending a 10-2 run that gave Calvert Hall the lead midway in the final period.

Graham's rebound and score off his own miss with 1:37 remaining in regulation ignited the closing run. Graham said the backcourt play of Boone, sophomore Kyle Wise and junior Sean Holmes helped revive the Cardinals.

"It's all about resilience, you never give up no matter what happens," said Graham, who scored nine points over the final eight minutes. "When we got down early, we continue to keep our composure and keep fighting."

Trailing 29-23 at half, Severn brought the fight to Calvert Hall in the second half, taking the lead on a short turnaround jumper by senior Marvin Smith (11 points), who followed with a steal and layup. The B Conference school upped the lead to 40-34 on a rebound and score by junior Tyler Thurston.

A layup by Will Smith had the Admirals in front 45-39 early in the fourth, but the Anne Arundel County squad only hit two of nine shots the rest of the way. Severn coach Tank Duckett said his team lost its composure down the stretch.

"We got them into nice backdoor situations; we were clicking on all cylinders. Late in the game when the team had to close out, we didn't show poise," said Duckett, whose team return to B Conference play Thursday hosting St. Paul's School, then travel to Annapolis to renew its rivalry with defending conference champ St. Mary's in a key South division battle. "We got a little frentic, shot the ball a little too quick. The game was right there for us, but we made the mistakes in the last two minutes."

The Cardinals didn't have a turnover in the final quarter, but Bauersfeld said defensive rebounding remains a concern. Calvert Hall will try to extend its win streak, hosting Archbishop Spalding Thursday, then have a weekend home-and-home with St. Maria Goretti in Baltimore Catholic League play.

"In the last six games, our effort has been outstanding," said Bauersfeld. "We are still young so we make a lot of silly mistakes, but the effort, the desire to compete and win is there."
First-year coach John Bauersfeld has Calvert Hall on a season-best three-game winning streak. The Cardinals host Archbishop Spalding Thursday evening in a MIAA A/Baltimore Catholic League contest.
