Play Georgetown Prep in the second round (6:30 PM)

The varsity basketball team earned a hard fought victory as they downed Charlotte Christian from North Carolina 66-63 in overtime at the Good Counsel Tip-Off Tournament. Gibbons started the game strong and ran out to an 8 point lead early as seniors Jamar Briscoe and Paul Kouvaris paced the Crusaders with 7 points and 6 points respectively in the first quarter. Gibbons led 18-14 after one. The second quarter saw much of the same as Kouvaris scored 6 more points, giving him a total of 12 for the half. Charlotte Christian did play well in the first half and made big plays led by senior Seth Curry, who has already committed to Liberty University. He scored 16 in the half and kept his team within striking distance as they trailed 34-31 at the half. Gibbons extended their lead in the third as they used a balanced attack to go up by eight points at the end of the third. Gibbons seemed to be in control throughout the fourth quarter until Charlott Christian turned up the pressure, forcing several turnovers and decreasing the lead. Gibbons still had the lead with under .30 seconds left to play, but a turnover late and a Seth Curry lay-up sent the game to overtime. Gibbons went down by 4 immediately in the first minute of overtime, but came back and made several big plays. Senior Jamar Briscoe made a critical basket and foul shot giving the Crusaders a one point lead. Gibbons was able to stop Christians next posession and senior Ryan Zepp made twp big free throws to ice the game. Gibbons will now play Georgetown Prep tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm. Leading the way for Gibbons was Jamar Briscoe with 19 points, Paul Kouvaris with 12 and Ryan Zepp with 12.
