(Friday afternoon games)
Class 3A/2A/1A
Friendly 31, Crossland 0
It wasn't the prettiest of 31-0 victories, but John Morgan, Jr. and the Patriots coaching staff will take it. Friendly managed just 11 yards in the first half, eeking out a 6-0 advantage. But the Patriots wore Crossland down, scoring on several Cavaliers turnovers for 19 fourth quarter points. Friendly senior wide receiver Alex Blake scored the decisive touchdown with a 46-yard reception up the right sideline.
(Saturday afternoon games)
Class 4A
Bladensburg 12, Laurel 6
The Mustangs defense has only allowed 12 points over the past two weeks, just enough for Blandensburg to inch out its second straight single-point margin win. Laurel, perhaps, squandered opportunities, with penalties and turnovers spelling doom despite DeAnte Love's emergence (123 yards rushing, one touchdown). The Mustangs should be 4-1 heading into a Week 6 road match-up with Wise.
Bowie 46, High Point 0
After managing just six points in the heartbreaking loss to Blandensburg, Bowie took out its frustration on reeling High Point. The Bulldog defense continued to be the staple, having allowed a 4A-county best seven points all season. High Point, on the other hand, has been outscored 155-0. It doesn't get any easier as the Eagles have Roosevelt and Suitland during the next two weeks.
C.H. Flowers 36, DuVal 14
After back-to-back blowouts, C.H. Flowers muscled an improving DuVal team at home. The Jaguars scored on a pivotal play just before the half, with quarterback Dewayne Powell connecting with Lorne Green, Jr. to build a 22-8 first-half lead. Mike Mayo's squad cruised from there despite a strong effort from Tiger quarterback Jesse Henderson (66-yard touchdown pass).
Eleanor Roosevelt 58, Parkdale 7
After edging Oxon Hill last week, the Raiders easily handled Parkdale. Senior quarterback Mike Thomas threw two touchdowns to Penn State verbal Derrick Thomas and even the backup, sophomore Jairus Cook, tossed a touchdown. Defensively, Isaiah Ross had 10 tackles, including two sacks, while Roosevelt totaled three interceptions. The good news for Parkdale? The Panthers scored their first twouchdown of the season.
Henry Wise 34, Northwestern-PG 7
The Pumas rebounded on the road behind senior Anthony Wright's 23 carries for a career-high 240 yards and two touchdowns. Wise quarterback J.R. Burrell had 75 yards passing and a touchdown, while junior tailback Justin Coles contributed another 54 yards on the ground.
Suitland 20, Oxon Hill 19
In the most exciting game of the year to date, Suitland survived for the second week in a row thwarting a would-be winning two-point conversion and subsequent Oxon Hill drive -- all within the last two minutes -- to stay undefeated in its home opener. Despite the Rams inexperience on offense, Nick Lynch has Suitland poised again to be one of the league heavyweights. On the flip side, Oxon Hill's Mike Wilson threw for 86 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns as the Clippers rallied against the league's top two teams the past two weeks-- only to fall short.
Class 3A/2A/1A
Douglass-PG 41, Central 0
Douglass-PG senior fullback Trey Massey celebrated his birthday with 74 yards on seven carries -- three for touchdowns -- to pace the Eagles to yet another win. Junior quarterback Richard Barber also ran for a score. The Douglass defense has only allowed 17 points through three games, with back-to-back shutouts on the resume.
Forestville 26, Largo 18
The Knights had to fend off a pesky Largo team hellbent on its first victory. Forestville junior quarterback Caleb Gaines completed nine passes for 130 yards, which included a career-high four touchdowns. Junior receiver Antonio Belt was the recepient of three Gaines touchdown tosses, including an insurance touchdown with 24 ticks left in the fourth quarter.
Gwynn Park 50, Fairmont Heights 0
The Yellow Jackets continued their winning ways, using an outstanding game by senior quarterback Lavaughn Hughes, who ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Gwynn Park tailback Nygee Carmichael -- who has dedicated the season to his late father -- ran for a game-high 87 yards and a touchdown on a mere six carries.
Potomac 41, Surrattsville 6
Potomac quarterback James Seay went six-of-eight for 185 yards and two touchdowns through the air to complement his rushing touchdowns as the Wolverines built a 21-0 first half lead. Potomac did, however, allow its first touchdown of the season despite playing its third straight game on the road.
