Entering the championship match against Magruder at the 3A-4A Regional Dual Meet Championship Tuesday, Whitman coach Derek Manon could not have been more pleased with the fact that his team had the heart of their order starting off the match.
The Vikings won the first six matches against the Colonels and jumped out to a 28-0 lead. Whitman (15-1) coasted the rest of the way for a 37-36 victory and its second straight 3A-4A regional championship.
"When I saw we were starting with 152 [weight class], I was very happy knowing we had the strength of our order starting off," Manon said. "It worked out well for us and we won the first six matches and got a huge lead, but nothing is guaranteed. Our other guys stepped up too to secure the win."
Whitman came in with a chip on its shoulder following a regular season loss to Sherwood and then dominated throughout Wednesday's meets.
"After losing to Sherwood, we realized that they were beatable, just like us," Manon said. "To win it all two years in a row is a huge accomplishment."
After Eric Beverly (152) won by major decision, Whitman got back-to-back pins from Steven Fisher (160) and Taylor Leighton (171). Then Aaron Norris (189) and Ned Daryoush (215) both won by decision before Danny Lee (285) pinned Magruder’s Mike Rinaldi.
"Momentum is big especially in wrestling," Manon said. "To get three, four, five wins in a row it gives our guys that much more confidence and cuts the pressure especially for the younger guys. When you're sending out freshmen and sophomores, for them to realize that they don't have to win to win the meet, it makes it much easier for them to wrestle."
The Colonels had important pins from Ravi Choxi (103) and Jordan Tolbert (119) but after Whitman’s Sawyer Symington (112) won by technical fall and Eric Harder (125) won by major decision against Nick DeCarlo, the Vikings forfeited the remaining matches for the one-point victory.
In their semifinal match against Springbrook (13-2) the Vikings won six straight matches to go ahead 32-7 before forfeiting their final four matches en route to a 32-31 victory.
The Blue Devils’ Dan Cazeau (152) won by decision and Nadjitade Badje (171) won by major decision before the Vikings went on their streak.
Magruder defeated top-seeded Sherwood (13-2) in their semifinal match thanks to Jack Cunningham (140) who won by decision (10-3) over the Warriors’ Michael Mucci in the final match to give the Colonels a 30-26 win.
Despite consecutive wins by Montgomery Barnsley (125), Ray Mencia (130) and Tyler Tockman (135) down the stretch, Sherwood could not overcome Magruder’s 11-point lead. The win was revenge for the Colonels, who lost to Sherwood 40-36 on Saturday.
