Maggie Walker woke Deep Run up with a 25-14 opening-game win, as the Wildcats won the next three sets comfortably for the Colonial District boys volleyball tournament title Thursday at Hermitage High.

Alex Haley logged 33 assists to keep Deep Run's offense running like a well-oiled machine.

Ross Madden was his favorite target. The district player of the year had 18 assists.

Garrett Short flirted with a triple-double (13 kills, 12 digs, nine blocks) for Kevin Pond's squad.

Deep Run will host Atlee in the Central Region quarterfinals, who it beat in four games earlier this season at Atlee.

"We're trying to get more focused and carry all of this momentum into regionals," Short said. "We're trying to take another state title but we know it's going to be tough. A lot of people are coming after us. Atlee's going to come out strong."

Maggie Walker GS got 40 assists from Matt Wilkinson and 16 kills for Parker Kirwin. Theresa Armstrong's team will travel to Capital District regular-season champ Highland Springs on Monday in the region tournament.
