Cross country season is in full swing in Prince's George County, Md. The second meet of the season  and the first of five Prince George's League non-scoring meets kicked off Wed., Sept 10 at Fort Washington Park.

The park is perhaps most famously known for a hill called "the General," which is an incline that seems endless to runners trying to conquer it. Spectators can watch from the top as runners grind their way to the top.

Wendall Brown of Henry Wise did not let "the general" slow his outstanding performance. Brown led the race from start to finish. His first mile was clocked at six minutes. He finished with a race time of 19 minutes, one second, finishing 30 seconds ahead of Eleanor Roosevelt's Dgen Mengis, who finished in 19 minutes, 31 seconds. Brown will likely face tougher competition when the Eleanor Roosevelt A-team shows up later this season.

Central placed two runners, Avan Jordan (20:10) and senior Devinne White (20:31) in the top-five, while Bowie senior Kory Kinney was sandwiched between the Falcons. Kinney's teammates, Bowie's Gerodo Amaya (20:45) and Malcom Hosten (20:54) placed in the top-10, as did several Raiders. Roosevelt had Kehinde Agbebakar (20:46), Adam Rhodes (20:55) and Daivd Ivey (20:58) all within the top-10 slots.

On the girls side, Frederick Douglass-PG junior Gloria Roberts paced 65 female runners with a top time of 21 minutes, four seconds. Roberts battled with Bowie's Anika Stark throughout the first mile with Deseree’ King of Oxon Hill and Danielle Calhoun of Eleanor Roosevelt not far behind. Stark spent the first mile surging hoping to break the spirit of other runners before "the General."

As the lead pack approached the steep hill, Roberts caught Stark, morphing a 20-second deficit into a commanding lead. Stark managed to finish fifth, while King, an Oxon Hill junior, nipped Calhoun by one second for the runner-up slot.
Calhoun's Roosevelt teammate, Sekinat Ekiyoto, finished fourth, while Stark, the top Bowie finisher, grabbed fifth. The Parkdale duo of Elizabeth Marino and Rachelle Bernadel finished sixth and seventh, while Douglass-PG's Syndey Shepard, High Point's Taylor Black and Central's Naujee Hicks rounded out the top-10.

The meet was well represented by 12 high schools throughout Prince George County. The next meet held at Fort Washington Park is Sept. 24th at 3 p.m.
