No. 2 Lake Clifton overcame a sluggish first three quarters behind strong play by their backcourt of Antoine Allen, Derrious Gilmore and Jason Sharp in the games final minutes to defeat Riverdale Baptist, 48-44, last night in the second day of action at the 12th annual Basketball Academy at Morgan State University Friday evening.

Coming off its 55-43 victory over No. 20 Dunbar Thursday evening, Riverdale Baptist (15-3) seemed to have Lake Clifton on the ropes toward the end of the third quarter. The Lakers were unable to play their usual frenetic pace and were stymied early by Riverdale Baptist's long and active frontline. The Crusaders' junior tandem of guard Chad Wilson and forward Thomas Robinson pushed Riverdale Baptist to a 36-29 lead at the start of the final quarter.

Daniel Horton, Lake Cliftons 6-foot-6 senior forward, brought the Lakers to within five with his lay-up at the start of the fourth quarter. Jason Sharps ensuing three pointer ignited the Lake Clifton (10-1) backcourt as he, Gilmore and Allen began to assert themselves offensively.

A Gilmore jumper put Lake Clifton in the drivers seat at 41-38 with four minutes, 16 seconds remaining in the game. Bryan Wilsons three-pointer knotted the game at 43, and Anton Shoetons free throw put the Crusaders from Prince George's County back in front by one entering the final two minutes.

Lake Clifton turned up the defensive pressure and survived thanks to Allens pull-up jumper and Gilmores game clinching free throws in the games final seconds.

We didnt have our normal look offensively but the game turned on our defensive pressure, said Lake Clifton coach Herman Harried. I made some adjustments, our guards turned it up defensively and we stuck with the game plan. They are a very well coached and poised team but once we wore them down, we pushed up.

Robinson led Riverdale Baptist, ranked 17th in the Washington area, with a game-high 15 points and junior guard Bryan Wilson had 11. Allen led Lake Clifton with 14 points, and Sharp added 12. The Lakers play defending Class 1A state champ New Town Saturday evening at Hill Field House.

We had to defend the entire court and stop their guards from penetrating and getting the ball to their big guys, said Allen. When teams get a lead on us, we never panic and take what the defense gives us. We were determined, down the stretch to rebound every shot, push the ball and look for easy baskets.
