It hasn't yet been 40 days and 40 nights, but the rain system that has taken up residence in the greater Baltimore region for the last several days has certainly caused some major headaches with the scheduling of all three MIAA baseball playoff tournaments.
The only tournament which has gotten underway is in the C Conference, where Beth Tfiloh is the lone unbeaten. Saints Peter & Paul and St. John's Catholic Prep have been in a holding pattern since Friday, trying to play the tournament's final elimination game and earn a place opposite the Warriors in the finals. The game, which has been postponed three times, including today, is now scheduled for tomorrow at neutral location still to be determined, as Saints Peter & Paul's field will remain unplayable.
This has forced the final to be move from tomorrow to Wednesday. It is still scheduled to be played at Joe Cannon Stadium with a 4:00 pm start. Should the Saints Peter & Paul/St. John's winner defeat Beth Tfiloh on Wednesday, it would force an "if game" to be played on Thursday at time and location to be determined.
The A & B Conference tournaments were scheduled to begin today, but both have been moved back, with the B still not having all of its entries, pending the outcome of one final regular season game.
That game, postponed since Friday, is betwen Friends and Annapolis Area Christian. Friends is locked in as the second seed from the Black Division, while AACS is trying to claim the third and final spot from that division. The Eagles are currently in fourth place, a half game behind defending B Conference champion St. Mary's. Those two teams split their meetings and each split with top seeded St. Vincent Pallotti. In addition, St. Mary's has been swept by Friends, which defeated AACS in the first meeting. Thus, if AACS defeats Friends, it will pull even with St. Mary's and claim the tie-break.
Boys' Latin is the top seed in the Red Division, with Park at #2 and Chapelgate Christian in the third position.
Weather permitting, Friends and AACS will play tomorrow and the tournament will begin on Wednesday.
On the opening day, Friends will host Chapelgate and Park will be at home to meet either St. Mary's or AACS. On Thursday Boys' Latin will host the Friends/Chapelgate survior, while the other first round winner will travel to Pallotti. The tournament will continue on Friday with the first set of elimination games, while the winners bracket final and another elimination game will be played on Saturday.
This will put the tournament back on track to resume as scheduled on Monday, with the finals set for next Wednesday at Ripken Stadium.
The A Conference bracket is all set, but the games will be pushed back one day. Tomorrow, St. Paul's will vist Loyola and Mount St. Joseph will travel to Archbishop Curley. Top-seeded Calvert Hall will host the Loyola/St. Paul's winner on Wednesday and the Curley/St. Joe winner will go to second-seeded Archbishop Spalding, also on Wednesday. In addition, tomorrow's losers will play the first elimination game, at the higher seed, on Wednesday.
Wednesday was originally scheduled as an off day for the tournament, so it will be back on its original schedule by Thursday. The A Conference finals are also at Ripken Stadium, next Wednesday. The if game for both the A & B Conferences will be next Thursday, at Ripken.
