After knocking on the door early in the game, Maryvale Prep finally broke through with a goal from Emily Noto Beckham style and went on to blank Catholic, 1-0, in IAAM soccer action yesterday.

The Lions were without several keys players due to injuries and sickness, but their bench and remaining starters were still able to put up 29 shots.  Quite a few of those came early in the opening half, with several shots hitting the post or just barely missing the goal.

Said Maryvale Coach Billy Reinhardt, We could have scored three or four goals in the first 15 minutes of the half, but we just couldn't finish.  Then Emily Noto received a back pass after just taking a corner kick.  She took a touch from the channel to the inside of the top corner of the 18-yard box and placed a solid low left-footed shot (bended ball) around a defender and nailed the inside of the post to finally get us a goal.

Maryvale would take that goal into the half for a 1-0 lead, and the Lion defense would make it stand up in the final half, shutting down the Cubs.  Goalie Sarah Mather notched five saves, as she and her fellow defenders combined for the shutout.  The Catholic goalie recorded eight saves.

Maryvale, in the B-Conference, improved to 2-0 on the young season.
