Sims, McCoy and Atkins combine for 36 points in victory.

by Peter Dalmasy

After surviving an 85-80 overtime victory over St. John's Catholic Prep on Thursday night in Frederick, head coach Pat Clatchey and his Gaels were back home in Irvington on Sunday afternoon as they hosted St. Maria Goretti of Hagerstown in one of two Baltimore Catholic League matchups on the day.

Clatchey's top-ranked Gaels would hold Goretti to just nine first half points, and continue en route to a convincing 64-34 victory.

Goretti had difficulties swinging the ball against a tenacious St. Joe defense. The Gaels would capitalize on their steals and finish with easy transition buckets.

Senior center Henry Sims showed off his long range skills today, matching Goretti's first half total of nine points in the first quarter alone. The future Georgetown Hoya would finish with 12. The backcourt duo of Eric Atkins and Justin McCoy combined for 24, while senior forward Chris Olsen also notched eight for St. Joe. In addition, the Gaels would receive scoring from nine total players in the contest.

Senior Justin McCoy credits his squads chemistry for the victory.

"In games like these, when we are up big, it's important to get other teammates to score a bucket," said McCoy.  "We don't have a player who is playing for himself. Everyone plays for each other."

Goretti, which has already swept Archbishop Spalding after their 52-42 defeat of the Cavaliers on Friday, received 11 points from senior guard Kevin Breslin and seven from Matisse Gaillard.

St. Joe (3-1 MIAA, 2-1 BCL, 11-1) must now prepare for Tuesday night's matchup, as they will host undefeated Loyola Blakefield. The Dons on Friday night defeated St. Frances, 60-46. The Panthers are the lone team that has beaten St. Joe in the early season.

When asked about how they are preparing McCoy said, "We have a three hour practice tomorrow.  Its going to be a tough game with Loyola and their good offense," said McCoy.

Head coach Cokey Robertson and Goretti (2-3 BCL, 6-7) will also have an important game as they host Towson Catholic on Tuesday.
