Arbuckle and Richardson Lead Pack on the Canal

Rain washes out Results in Cecil County

C&D Canal Course, Chesapeake City

On a dark and ominous afternoon, runners from Northeast, Bohemia Manor, Elkton, and Perryville began to unload from their buses just in time for the weather to wreak havoc on any chance of a quality warm up.  At precisely 3:29, in the midst of mass chaos and confusion, Bo manor coach Steve Pizulli hollered at the top of his lungs,"If it thunders or lightnings, we will pull you off the course; otherwise, just get to the finish as fast as you can".

As one Elkton runner popped out of her mother's BMW just in the nick of time to get off at the blast of Pizzuli's gun.  Sixtenn minutes and thirty seconds later, Luke Arbuckle of Elkton came trotting through the 3.1 mile course, seemingly unchallenged, as Bo Manor's Joe Stover sat out due to what Pizzuli labeled, "being kinda banged up."

Followed by Arbuckle was the "Red Sea," Bo Manor's strong supporting cast of five,  which easily won the boy's race.

Leading the way for the ladies was Cara Richardson, who broke the tape in 20 minutes, 48 seconds.  As more runners continued to finish, more rain continued to fall.  Pizzuli literally "closed the book" on the meet as he shoved all of the wet notecards with runners' places, names, and times, all barely legible into his notebook. "I don't think there will be any official results from this meet," he said as the wet ink smudged itself into blots of blue lines in the notebook.

Still, a great experience was had by all, runners, coaches, and parents alike. - Timothy Jadick
