Generals tame lions

Badminton team takes York Road rivals

Published: 09/12/2008

The Towson Generals badminton team took to the road for the second time this week to take on traditional rival Dulaney High in badminton action. When the contest was over the defending county champions came away with a shocking 11 – 0 victory.  “I knew Dulaney lost a lot of talent to graduation last year, but I had no thoughts as to shutting them out. This is a big, big win for us” said the Generals’ general – coach Cary Sonneborn.

Last season’s Dulaney team was arguably the strongest in the league even though they did not make the county team championship game. The Lion’s had captured four medals at last year’s individual tournament, gold and silver in boys’ singles, bronze in girls’ singles, and gold in boys’ doubles. These champions and a few more have moved on, leaving the Lions rebuilding for the future. Towson seems to have staked claim as the team to beat this season. It was the third win for the Generals this year.

Led by seniors Scott Just and Jimmy Whebdee, last year’s bronze medal winning duo in boys’ doubles, the game started with their victory over Steve Yu and Nick Flower, 15 – 7, 15 – 6.  Last seasons’ boys’ singles bronze medal winner, Ryan Recchia of Towson defeated Han Lwin, 15 – 2, 15 – 0 and the wins kept piling up. One of the most exciting games of the day featured Towson’s sibling team of Andrew and Diana Reighert taking on Lewonia Maurophilipios and Clay Duncan in mixed doubles. Towson won 17 – 14, 17 – 14. The only game to go to the best of three was in men’s singles as the number threes paired off. Towson’s Tae Yang defeated Kun Leng 15 – 9, 13 – 15, 15 – 3.

Towson will travel once again next Friday as they visit division foe Owings Mills in a 5:00 game. Dulaney goes to Woodlawn.
