PHILMORE LEADS JOHN CARROLL PAST ST. MARY'S, 85-72 St. Mary's starts fast, but John Carroll takes control in the fourth quarter to claim its second win. Kicking off the return of the Charm City Classic, which returned to Baltimore on Saturday, after a nine year hiatus, John Carroll solved St. Mary's five guard offense and overcame 27 points by star Josh Morgan-Greene to capture an 85-72 win over the Satins, at Loyola College's Reitz Arena. The Patriots (2-1), who are making the jump to the MIAA A Conference this season, trailed for most of the first half against the team which knocked them from the B Conference playoffs last winter, in a game which remained tight throughout. However, a 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter extended a three-point lead to 70-61 and John Carroll was able to close out the contest with solid free throw shooting down the stretch. John Carroll countered Morgan-Greene, who scored 43 in a win over Archbishop Spalding, earlier in the week, with 25 from its junior star Isiah Philmore. St. Marys started the game off on a 6-0 run and lead through a good portion of two quarters, as John Carroll struggled defensively against the Saints quick, spread offense. However, the Patriots hung close and eventually erased the slim Saints' lead to forge a 37-37 halftime tie. The equalizing basket came on a layup by DMetric Evans layup, near the buzzer, giving the Patriots some momentum heading into the second half. Throughout the third quarter, the team's traded leads as Morgan-Green and Philmore took turns leading their clubs on small runs. When the period ended, John Carroll led by two, setting the stage for its late pust to victory. Erick Smith, who would score 13 in the contest, clinched the victory by hitting 3-of-4 free throws, in final minutes. The Patriots also got 12 points from Josh Wiegand, who was playing in his future home venue, after recently signing to play college basketball for Loyola coach Jimmy Patsos. St. Marys (2-1), which was a last-minute replacement for New Jersey power St. Benedict's in this event, also received solid production from Trey Quinn, Ronnie Hoffman and Nick Groce. The trio combined for 38 points in the loss. The Saints will now shift their focus to winning a second consecutive B Conference schedule and they will open their league schedule against St. Vincent Pallotti on December 11th. Next for John Carroll is its official A Conference debut, as head coach Tony Martin will face his former school, Spalding, on Tuesday in Bel Air.
