Walt Whitman's field hockey team defeated undefeated Blake 1-0 Tuesday night, in a tight game at Blake that wasn't decided until the final minutes.
Both teams played solid defense, shutting off passing lanes and battling at both ends of the field for much of the contest, but with about three minutes to go in regulation, center midfielder and senior Stephanie Dorman found left forward senior Maya Herm, who sent off a hard drive to the left inside corner of the cage to score the game winner and end Blake's perfect season.
Despite a late penalty corner and potential scoring opportunity, Blake (13-0) wasn't able to capitalize, giving the Vikings the win.
Whitman (9-5) had lost to Blake 5-0 in the first game of the season but is powering through the playoffs, starting with last week's 1-0 double overtime, double strokes victory over Wootton. Whitman goalie senior Hillary Wall had another stellar performance, facing 15 shots and making 10 saves in the victory. Whitman's defense was led by seniors Molly Finley and Adele Carnemark.
