Sophmore Ben Vester was brought up to Varsity Squad just last week. Coach Sauers said he and Coach Kreitzer discussed bringing Ben up to the varsity level earlier in the season but decided against it in an effort to allow Ben more time to mature at the Junior Varsity level. We took Ben with us in the beginning of our season to one of our scrimmages in which he pitched very well, said Sauers. We felt we could go forward with the pitching staff we had in place and decided to send Vester back to help boost our Junior Varsity squad.
Recently several of our players fell victim to injury, so we went back and got Vester. Ben pitched for us last season and had several of our key wins. He was one of our most successful pitchers that season, Coach Sauers said. Coach Kreitzer and I were following his progress game to game at the Junior Varsity level and knew in the game against Hammond, Vester struck out eleven batters and got the win. We felt he could help us be successful at the varsity level, so we reached out to him and he agreed to give it a shot. "This kid has great potential and should do well for us," said Sauers.
Big Ben got his first Varsity start on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia, Howard County Maryland, when he went up against Long Reach High School, in which he pitched a complete game allowing only three runs on four hits.
He was supported by Wilde Lake's Offense who produced sixteen hits for eighteen runs. The Cat's were lead by Captain Anthony Scafone who went three for three with three RBI's, Junior Corey Lyman who went three for four with one RBI, and Sophmore Joe Kelly who went three for four with two RBI's. Joe had a double and a triple in the game. In the end Wilde Lake came out on top eighteen to three in a game that lasted only five innings, to boost their record to five wins and three losses.
Final Score:
Wilde Lake 18 Long Reach 3
Winning Pitcher: Ben Vester (Wilde Lake - Complete Game)
Loosing Pitcher: Hendon (Long Reach)
