DigitalSports and Philbin’s Family Fitness and Athletic Training Center were proud to honor 19 Montgomery County student-athletes from 10 schools in the Rockville-Gaithersburg area Sunday as part of its Student Athlete of the Month program.
Here are February's honorees and some of their many accomplishments:
Churchill
Girl: Alicia Watkins, Swimming
Alicia was the top scoring girl for Churchill at Metros. She was the champion at the 500 free and runner-up in the 200 free. She anchored their championship freestyle relay and led the girls to a first place team finish.
Boy: Chris Verboncouer, Swimming
Chris was the top scorer for Churchill at the Metros swimming meet,
where the Bulldogs boys placed fourth and won a combined team
championship.
Gaithersburg
Girl: Lauren Rose, Indoor Track
Lauren placed second in the state in pole vault and has excelled in the
field events, helping guide Gaithersburg to the 4A indoor track state
championship.
Boy: Owen Cain, Indoor Track
Owen set the county record for the 55-meter hurdles this year. He tied
the county record in the high jump with a 6-foot-7 leap and won the
state high jumping title. He won the long jump county meet and has
verbally committed to University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Magruder
Girl: Brittany Powell, Diving
Brittany was not defeated on the diving board this season, winning the
county, division and Metros titles for the second straight year. She
will dive at Harvard next year.
Boy: Ravi Choxi, Wrestling
Ravi wrestled on varsity for the first year this season as a senior
because he had great wrestlers on his team in his weight class. Choxi
placed fifth at the Maryland state championships at 103 pounds. He
takes classes at Montgomery College two nights a week.
Northwest
Girl: Alyssa Henshaw
Alyssa anchored Northwest’s 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. The 4x400 took
fourth at states and 4x800 placed third at states. She individually
qualified for the 1600 meters and took fifth. She has a 4.52 weighted
GPA and is a member of the Science Honor Society and Ambassadors.
Boy: Myles Petretti, Basketball
Myles helped lead Northwest to its finest season in program history.
The Jaguars reached the region semifinals for the first time this year,
thanks to Petretti’s 14 ppg. He also holds a 3.85 GPA despite being a
transfer student from Germany.
Quince Orchard
Girl: Veronica Kresse, Basketball
Veronica was a four-year varsity player – just one of seven in school
history. She averaged 9.2 ppg this year and will play basketball at
Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA next year. She has a
3.53 GPA as an honors and AP student.
Boy: Greg Holland, Wrestling
A sophomore wrestler, Greg qualified for regionals after going 14-10 during the season. Holland is like a coach in the room, his Coach Chris Tao, said. He carries a 4.0 GPA.
Richard Montgomery
Boy: T.J. Fitzgerald, Basketball
T.J. averaged about 10 ppg this year and lead the team in
three-pointers made with 37. Richard Montgomery reached the region
quarterfinals of the playoffs. T.J. also has a 3.5 GPA.
Rockville
Girl: Natalie Snyder, Diving
Natalie won every single one of her diving dual meets. She has been
taking honors classes all freshman year and been on the honor roll all
year.
Boy: Eric Sachs, Diving
Eric placed fifth at Metros. He qualified for states all four years of
his high school career. He has honors and AP classes and has a 10
percent scholarship to the University of Maryland.
Seneca Valley
Girl: Virginia Owusu-Mainoo, Indoor Track
Virginia placed third at the Montgomery County Championships in the
shot put, throwing it 29 feet, 1 inch. She also qualified for the state
tournament.
Boy: Lorenzo Christie, Basketball
Lorenzo excels as a three-sport athlete currently on the basketball team, which has reached the 3A state semifinals.
Watkins Mill
Girl: Hannah Parra, Swimming
Hannah has been on the Wolverines’ swim team for four years and she
competed in all events. She’s a great student and even better person,
Coach Nicole Van Tassell said.
Boy: David Gaynor, Swimming
David was the captain of the swim team. He swam in the 100 fly and two relays at Metros and is an exceptional student with a 4.0 GPA.
Wootton
Girl: Sophia Wang, Swimming
The junior swam in the 50 and 100 Group B finals at Metros and anchored
the 200 and 400 free relays for the Patriots. She is one of the top
students in her class.
Boy: Jordan Lesser, Diving
Jordan took sixth at Metros and fourth at counties. He dives in a national program out of Germantown, Md.
