A total of 14 schools competed in this 1st-year event at Richardson Complex at Pearl Harbor.  The JROTC cadets formed 34 teams and competed in several events testing physical conditioning, aquatic skill, and how fast you can climb a tree.

“You can’t really train for that,” said Linda Naki, coordinator of the event and JROTC instructor at Campbell High School, the host school.

The events were an obstacle course, physical fitness, water rafting, 2-mile run, tug o war, and the popular coconut tree climbing.  The Hawaii National Guard provided the tree in which cadets needed to climb as fast as they could and hit a buzzer at the top.

“We normally have the Army Training Challenge.  But because so many troops are deployed, that was cancelled,” said senior Darren Taylor, the student commander of the Campbell JROTC.    PFC Taylor is actually in the Hawaii National Guard as part of the College First Program, as the minimum age is 17 years.

Awards went to the team winners in each event plus an overall winner.  The awards were presented by Captain Michael Malone from the US Navy.
