Heavy rain on
Friday night forced the much anticipated match-up between the Little
Orioles and the Aberdeen Arsenal to be postponed until Saturday morning
in the "Fourth of July Blast Tournament" at the Lake Shore Baseball
Complex in Pasadena. Play was resumed in the top of the first at noon
on Saturday, under cloudy skies, with the Arsenal shortstop Ryan Jurney
(Mount St. Joseph) on first with one down, and left-hander Josh Hader
(Old Mill) on the mound for coach Tim O'Malley's O's.
The Arsenal grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the inning thanks
to an Oriole miscue, but the Orioles answered with a four -run home
half, on a two-run double by Nick Freeberger (Gibbons), and RBI singles
by Jimmy Kaplanges (Kent Isalnd) and Zach Weiss (Chesapeake-AA). Freeberger's double plated center-fielder Joe Obitz (Cheapeake-AA), who walked, and sweet-swinging left-fielder Justin Fratantuono (Cardinal Gibbons) who doubled.
The O's took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch,
and Aberdeen got one back in the third on back-to-back doubles by
center-fielder Ryan Schoenbauer (South River), and Jurney to close the
gap to 5-3. Arsenal right-hander Ben Grace (Gibbons) held the Orioles scoreless the
rest of the way, and Aberdeen Coach Jeff Jurney used all of the weapons
in his arsenal to score six times in the fourth, and five more times in
the fifth, as the Arsenal romped to a 14-5 victory to advance in the
tourney's winners bracket.
In the fourth, Jurney's club batted around, displaying its own 4h of July fireworks, with six runs on five hits. Ben Smallenbrook
(Archbishop Spalding) led off with a double, Tom Cornelius (Chesapeake AA) doubled
him in and Jurney, who was 4-for-4, plated one with a single. Jurney
had two RBi on the day and he scored two runs. Aberdeen got five more
runs on five hits in the fifth. Jordan Myers (Chesapeake AA) doubled in
a run and Grace helped his own cause with a two-run single.
Cornelius had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs, Myers had an RBI and scored two runs, and Smallenbrook scored two runs.
