Brandon Sofia rushed for scores of 13, 20 and 45 yards, to lead an offensive onslaught by No. 11 Perry Hall, as the Gators blanked host Dulaney, 42-0, in Baltimore County 4A-3A football action on Saturday.
Gator quarterback Davonta Farrell rushed for a 15-yard touchdown and threw a 10-yard scoring pass to University of Maryland-bound tight end David Stinebaugh. In addition, Dan Vizzard returned a fumble recovery 20 yards for yet another score, and Brett Ullman had a sack and was good on all six of his extra point kicks for Perry Hall.
The Gators (5-0, 4-0) showed not letdown after last week's 17-14 overtime win over Hereford, which denied Perry Hall a third straight 4A-3A League title, last year.
At the season's midway point, the Gators and 20th-ranked Milford Mill (5-0,
4-0) are tied for first place in the county standings. The two teams will meet in the final regular season game, but a lot can happen before that takes place.
Hereford and Franklin, both at 3-2, and, 3-1, can each still figure into the league title chase since each still has yet to face the Millers, who are coming off of Saturday's 26-17 win over county rival Catonsville.
The Gators, on Friday, play host to Franklin in a game coach Keith Robinson considers to be a very dangerous one.
"We've got another huge game next Friday with Franklin coming to our place,"
said Robinson. "I told my guys after the Hereford game to prepare for two of the most dangerous offensive players in our league in Navassa Brown and Carl Fleming."
Fleming of Franklin is headed for the University of Pittsburgh.
"They are well coached," Robinson said in praise of Indians' coach Anthony Burgos. "I have no doubt that they are going to come in hungry next Friday night. It should be another good one."
Against the Dulaney Lions, however, the Gators wasted little time in getting onto the scoreboard, taking a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
Sofia finished with eight carries for 135 yards and three touchdowns.
The senior got things started on the Gator's first possession, when Sofia broke several tackles on the way to a physical, 45-yard scoring run.
The Gators next possession ended with Farrell, a junior quarterback, hitting Stinebaugh in the end zone for a 10-yard score.
Farrell (8-for-15, 160 yards passing) demonstrated an ability to be a dual-threat, also scoring on a 15-yard run culminated by an acrobatic dive to the pylon to make the score 21-0 after Ullman's first of six extra point kicks.
Through the first five games, Farrell has completed 49-of-83 passes for 744 yards and eight touchdowns to go with 327 rushing yards and four more touchdowns.
The Gators' defense showed why it has held its opposition to a combined 37 points in five games, even getting on the scoreboard when Vizzard took control.
Vizzard picked up a fumble following a sack by Ullman, and then, he scampered 20 yards into the end zone for the Gator's fourth score. A senior linebacker, Vizzard leads the Gators with 45 tackles.
The Gators closed out the first half scoring with another touchdown run by Sofia, this time from 13 yards out.
On the season, Sofia has carried the ball 45 times for 457 yards -- a translation of 10.1 yards per carry -- and has three each in touchdowns rushing and receiving, the latter on 10 catches.
"Early on, I think we caught some teams by surprise because Brandon didn't play last year. But I don't think he will be sneaking up on any of our remaining opponents," said Robinson. "Brandon is the full package: He runs with explosiveness and power, he makes people miss in the open field, he's a reliable receiver, and he blocks."
Sofia would go on to add another TD on a 20 yard run in the third quarter to complete the final margin of victory.
