The sectional assignments for the 2009 and 2010 football state tournaments were announced March 30 by the IHSAA Executive Committee. The format was designed by the 15-person Football Realignment Committee, with representatives from all three IHSAA legislative districts and every classification, and was forwarded to the Executive Committee for its approval.
A total of 319 football-playing schools were assigned to 40 sectionals within the five-class structure. Of those 40 sectionals, all but one (Class 5A Sectional 8) will have eight teams for the next two seasons. Those eight-team sectionals will have four first-round games, two semifinal games, and the sectional championship game played over a three-week period. Sectional 8 will have three first-round games, with one team receiving a bye into one of the two semifinals, followed by the championship game.
A total of 28 schools will play in a different classification than they had in the previous two-year cycle.
