Indiana football is beginning to draw attention from the rest of the nation, and some of the state’s elite teams will be competing June 13 as the Pike 7 on 7/Lineman Challenge kicks off at 9 a.m. ET.
Pike coach Derek Moyers said the event is completely open to the public, so come on out and support these 21 teams on the gridiron! So just what exactly IS a 7 on 7, or SOS, camp?
The basic rules:
• Games will last 25 minutes on a 40-yard field.
• Seven players will be on the field per each team.
• Play will start at the 40-yard line and go to the end zone.
• First downs occur every 10 yards, but with three downs instead of four.
• Ball will be placed on the nearest 5-yard line from where it is downed.
• It’s two-hand touch, with players wearing the helmets but no pads (these are not-hitting drills).
• There can be no quarterback runs or draws due to the fact that there are no linemen on either side of the ball.
• The quarterback is allowed 4.0 seconds to throw the ball before it is considered a sack.
• Interceptions are ruled a dead ball and result in a turnover.
• Fumbles are dead where the ball touches the ground, with the offensive team keeping the ball.
• A sack results in the loss of down and moves the ball back five yards.
• Pass interference penalty will be loss of down if called on the offense and an automatic first down in called on the defense.
Scoring will be as follows:
Offensive scoring
• Six points per touchdown
• One point per three-yard conversion
• Two points per five-yard conversion
Defensive scoring
• One point for forcing a punt
• Two points for forcing a three-and-out possession
• Three points for an interception
