For fans of baseball, especially high level high school baseball, here is a word of advice: Get out and see the area's top talent as they compete through the region in summer leagues and high profile tournaments. A case in point was Monday night's scheduled game between the Maryland Orioles and the Southern Maryland Cardinals, at Archbishop Curley, where the lineups looked like the roster for a high school all-star game.
The Orioles took the field with Bobby Kirby (Loyola) on the mound, backed by Alec Frederick
(Dulaney) at short, Robbie Harris (Cardinal Gibbons) in
right, Hunter Kitchens (St. Paul's) in left, Kodi Hines (Archbishop Spalding) at second, Brian Hudson (Stephen Decatur) at
third, and Woody Wlodarczyk (C.M.Wright) behind the plate. In addition, Calvert Hall's Kevin
Lingerman was in the line-up as the desigated-hitter. Lingerman,
Frederick and Wlodarczyk had just returned from Norman, Oklahoma, where
they were part of the Team Maryland squad that went 4-4 in the 32nd
Annual Sun Belt Classic.
Lingerman notched a win in Oklahoma on a three-hitter against Arizona,
and he picked up a save in a Maryland win over Team Canada.
"The
competition was outstanding," said Lingerman, who played on four
straight MIAA championship teams at Calvert Hall. "It was comparable to
the teams we faced in California in the early spring."
Lingerman was
consistent at the plate as well, hitting over .300 for the
tournament.
Dulaney's Frederick, who played for the North in the Brooks Robinson
All-Star Game at Oriole Park on June 15, had a great week. Frederick
was 8-for-17 and walked 12 times, leading the team with an on-base
percentage of .540.
"We came very close to making it to the finals,"
said Frederick. "We lost close games to Texas (6-4) and Oklahoma
(5-4)."
Texas went on to win the classic with a 12-7 win over defending champion Georgia.
Wlodarczyk, also a member the North squad in the Brooks Robinson game was in the clean-up spot on Monday night, but he didn't get a chance to
hit. After Kirby retired the Cardinals in the top of the first, lightning
stopped the game. During the prescribed 20-minute wait, more lightning
strikes flashed across the sky in right-center field and a light rain started to fall. After a delay of 35 minutes, the
game was called.
The weather disappointed the crowd, which was denied an opportunity to watch a Cardinal line-up that
included Jeff Kemp and Matt Hillsinger of Spalding, as well as Carl Travers and
Tommy Winegardner of Riverdale Baptist. Travers and Winegardner were
members of the South squad in the Brooks Robinson game and Cards
catcher Andrew Burgess (Leonardtown) was an alternate.
The O's under coach Bill Fritz came into the game with a 6-2 record.
"We're playing well," said Fritz, an assistant coach for Jack Thomas at
Curley during the high school season.
In early August, O's will play a short series of games with Youse's
Maryland Orioles, prior to the annual Johnstown Tourney in Pennsylvania.
