Gilman golfer Brad Miller achieved a major career milestone this week when he qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, the same tournament won three times by Tiger Woods, before the world's undisputed #1 player embarked on his amazing professional career.
Miller, who placed second in last week's Maryland State Junior Golf Championship, an event he has won twice previously, qualified for the national event by shooting 144 over two rounds this week at the Chevy Chase Club. He was second in a 65-man field, firing rounds of 70 and 74.
The U.S. Junior Amateur, run by the United States Golf Association, will be held July 23-26 at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Missouri. The event is open to male golfers who have not reached their 18th birthday prior to the close of competition and whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 6.4. It is also one of the more unique competitions in golf, as it begins with two days of stroke play, before the field is cut to 64 competitors who then compete in single elimination match play to determine the champion.
Miller, who will begin his senior year at Gilman in the fall, will be competing for the The Junior Championship Trophy, which has been presented annually by the USGA since 1948. The large sterling bowl of Sherarton design was produced by J.E. Caldwell and Company of Philadelphia. It is a replica of a bowl produced in 1796 by noted early American silversmith Samuel Williamson. The original is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
In addition to Woods, others who have won the event include Johnny Miller (1964) and David Duval (1989). Jack Nicklaus also played in the event, but never advanced beyond the semifinal round of match play. |
