ROCKWELL IN THE HUNT AT MARYLAND OPEN

Gilman grad and former MIAA champion fires low nine and finishes one under to tie for eighth

Chris Rockwell, who won the 2006 MIAA Individual Stroke Play Golf Championship while a senior at Gilman, is tied for eighth after one round at the 86th Maryland Open Championship, being held this week at Chartwell Golf & Country Club.

Rockwell, who plays out of Green Spring Valley HC, fired a one under par opening round score of 70 and is just three shots behind leader Chip Sullivan, a PGA pro from Ashley Plantation in Virginia.

Off to a blistering pace, Rockwell posted the day's low nine when he shot a 31 on the back nine, where he opened.  A couple of three puts, however, prevented him from being closer to the lead as he closed with a 39.

Rockwell just completed his freshman year at Vanderbilt University, where he posted a 74.17 scoring average over 12 rounds.  His low round of 69 was tied for sixth best on the team and he holed 27 birdies during the season.

Several golfers who took part in the 2007 MIAA Championships also participated in the event with McDonogh's Michael Fader and Gilman's Brad Miller leading that group with four over par scores of 75.  Also of note, Archbishop Curley's Evan Kilchenstein posted a (+7) 78 and John Mlynarski of Saints Peter & Paul, who tied for seventh recently in the Maryland Junior Amateur Championship, was in at 79 (+8).

Several other MIAA alumni golfers were also in the field.  The tournament continues today and tomorrow.
