St. Joseph's Chris Lowe converted a try, just seconds before the final
whistle blew, lifting the Gaels to 10-7 non-conference win over North
Bay RFC as they opened their second season of varsity rugby play,
Thursday.
Captain Rob Manning initiated the winning score
with a dive into the try zone, after the Gaels were turned away on four
consecutive advances in the closing minutes of the second half.
R.J. Bass of North Bay shot down the sideline,
from the 22-meter line, ran past all the St. Joe tacklers to setup the
game's initial try, 10 minutes into the contest. Pat Bish converted to
make the score 7-0.
For the remainder of the first half, the Gael
defenders kept North Bay pinned down at their own end but they could
not generate much offense. A North Bay penalty, however, led to a
thre-point kick by Lowe, cutting St. Joe's deficit to 7-3 at the half.
