DONS DUNK GAELS

Loyola's 9-3 victory over Mount St. Joseph left it a game behind Calvert Hall in the standings.

By Joe DiBlasi

Loyola remained one game behind Calvert Hall in the chase for first place in the MIAA-A Conference, defeating Mount St. Joe on Tuesday at Blakefield, 9-3.

Loyola's defense stepped up, and goalie Mano Motsiopoulos had a good day in the nets with eight saves

Motsiopoulos allowed the fewest number of goals that an MIAA opponent has scored in a game against the Dons so far this season

"We scored early, and that took a lot of pressure off," said Motsiopoulos. "My play is often a reflection of our overall defense, and we played good team defense today."

Tyler Thein had the first three goals of the day, scoring one within the first two minutes, and adding two more in the second quarter to lead Loyola's scoring attack.

Alex Fuller and Hugh Davidson each had two for Loyola, which led, 4-0, at halftime.

Senior Charlie Waesche said "St. Joe likes to shoot from outside five, or about 17 feet in front of the goal," said senior Charlie Waesche.

"In practice, we worked hard to defend that shot," Waesche said. "We kept St. Joe from taking a lot of shots, and that was the key to a good defensive effort."

Coach Keith Schertle added that while the Dons "had a great defensive effort, I expected a little more from the offense," adding, "We didn't seem to attack the goal as much as I wanted."

Manos, said Schertle, "has elevated his game. He comes out more now and anticipates the shot."

Loyola has to keep pace with Calvert Hall, anticipating the Oct 22 rematch on the road. That game will likely decide the No. 1 seed in the Oct. 27 championships.
