Arundel High graduate Nicole Woody won the 44 kilogram (97 pounds) weight class as a member of the U.S.A. women's team during Saturday's U.S. dominates Pan American Junior Women's Championships in Cuenca, Ecuador.
One of seven gold medalists for the U.S.A., Woody, a 2006 Junior World Champion, is an Odenton resident who defeated Mariela Romero, of El Salvador; Lorena Paez, of Mexico; and Diana Pizza, of Ecuador.
As a senior at Arundel High in 2006, Woody became the first girl to reach the finals of a Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Wrestling Tournament, when she was a runner-up at 103-pounds to River Hill of Howard County's wrestler Scott Mantua.
Woody just completed her freshman year as a wrestler with Oklahoma City University's Women's Team.
