Wrestling

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound wrestler improved his record to 31-1 with three victories on the way to winning last weekend's Class 4A-3A East Regional title at South River High in Anne Arundel County.

Massarelli scored his 26th pin of the year in 47 seconds over Meade's Mwanza Walamulumba, who had lost just three times entering their bout.

Massarelli then edged Old Mill's Nigel Pierce, 8-7, in their semifinal, and scored an impressive, 15-0, technical fall victory over Severna Park's state runner-up Billy Nichols for the overall title. Nichols was 28-2 entering their bout.

As a freshman, Massarelli was county runner-up on the junior varsity. As a sophomore, Massarelli was third at counties. Last year, Massarelli was a county and regional runner-up and went 0-2 at Class 2A-1A states -- all at 171 pounds.

This year, Massarelli missed the first couple of weeks of the season after having suffered a broken left fibia during a tackling drill in football practice during the seventh week of the season.
