Last Week’s IAAM Games of the Week - RESULTS

Here are the results from last week’s Games of the Week in the IAAM.  Key match-ups features six ranked teams in the A Conference in the three team sports and two of those games ended in ties. THE Game of the Week would have to be the Volleyball A Conference thriller, won by host St. Paul’s SFG, 3-2, over Mount de Sales.

Look for this week’s Games of the Week, to be posted shortly.

A Conference Soccer
McDonogh (3-0, No. 1) @ Spalding (3-0, No. 6), Tuesday 9/23

The two top-ten ranked teams played to a 1-1 tie.  Gigi Mangione scored first for McDonogh and then Spalding’s Maggie Morrison tied the game later in the half.  Defense took over after that. For complete game story and video highlights, click here.  By week’s end, McDonogh, Spalding and John Carroll were tied for first, all at 3-0-1.

B Conference Soccer
Friends (2-1) @ Catholic (3-0), Tuesday 9/23

The Quakers and Cubs played to a 2-2 tie. It was their lone meeting of the season. By week’s end, Catholic was in second place at 3-1-1, behind first-place St. Paul’s SFG (4-0).  Roland Park (3-2) and Bryn Mawr (3-1) both have nine points, followed by Friends (2-1-1) with seven.

C Conference Soccer
Annapolis Area Christian (5-0) @ St. Timothy’s (2-0-1), Monday 9/22

The undefeated Eagles remained undefeated, but faced maybe their toughest game yet, having to go overtime to claim a 2-1 win over St. Timothy’s. Sheila Anthony had a big game in goal for STS with 18 saves; her counterpart, Lane Cheek, had eight for AACS. Sophomore Sarah Castle scored both goals for the Eagles. The two teams meet again on 10/9 in Annapolis.  AACS has a grip on first (7-0, 21 pts) and Towson Catholic, after a 1-0 win over STS on Friday, is in second (5-1, 15).  St. Tim’s is right behind in third (3-2-1, 10).

A Conference Field Hockey
Bryn Mawr (4-1) @ Garrison Forest (4-0), Tuesday 9/23

Like soccer above, this A Conference game was also a battle of top ten teams with No. 8 at No. 4.  And, like soccer, this one also ended in a tie. The defenses ruled and the result was a 0-0 tie. Abby Bisbee notched eight saves for BMS and Emily Cain had four for GFS. The two teams will meet again on 10/16 at Bryn Mawr.  At week’s end, it was Garrison in first (6-0-1, 19) by three points over Bryn Mawr (5-1-1, 16) with Spalding in third (4-2-1, 13).

B Conference Field Hockey
Mount de Sales (2-1) @ McDonogh (4-0), Monday 9/22

Alissa Polino scored on a fast-break in the first overtime to give the Eagles a 2-1 win. The teams meet again on 10/14 at Mount de Sales.  At week’s end, it was McDonogh in control of first (6-0, 18) with Friends in second (4-2-1, 13).  MDS and John Carroll are tied for third, both at 4-2, with 12 points.

C Conference Field Hockey
Mercy (4-0-1) @ Baltimore Lutheran (3-0-1), Monday 9/22

In a key C match-up, Amanda Stecco scored in overtime to give visiting Mercy a 2-1 win over Baltimore Lutheran. Jenna Parr’s first-half goal gave Mercy a 1-0 lead, but the Saints tied it in the second half on a goal from Megan Kutchey. For game story and video highlights, click here.  The teams meet again on 10-14, at Mercy. The Magic rules first-place in the C, sitting at 7-0-1 and 22 points. Lutheran and IND are tied for second, both at 5-1-1 and 16 points.

A Conference Volleyball
Mount de Sales (3-0) @ St. Paul’s SFG (3-0), Tuesday 9/23

You’d be hard-pressed to witness a better volleyball match; two ranked teams, play-off atmosphere.  This one was a classic battle, down to the final point. Host St. Paul’s won the first and third games, and Mount de Sales won the second and fourth.  The Gators prevailed in the tie-breaker, barely.  Bailey Webster led SPSFG with 34 kills, and Katy Buck (18) and Kasey Mercier (21) combined for 39 kills for MDS.  St. Paul’s now sits alone in first place in the A Conference.  The 3-2 win went like this: 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12.  For game story and video, click here.

B Conference Volleyball
Mercy (4-0) @ Notre Dame Prep (3-0), Friday 9/26

The last two unbeaten teams in the B battled in Towson on Friday and Mercy came away with a 3-1 win: 25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23. NDP rallied from being down 2-0, and won the third game.  The Blazers came close to sending it to a fifth-game tie-break, but fell short by two points.  Ava Trageser (16) and Lindsey Scheve (11) combined for 27 kills to pace Mercy, while Maggie Marion was 19/19 serving with seven kills.  Alexis Sanders (9), Cait Carmen (8) and Katie Hill (7) combined for 24 kills to lead NDP. The teams meet again at Mercy on 10/20.  Mercy has sole possession of first (6-0, 18) and NDP is in second (5-1, 15).

C Conference Volleyball
Mount Carmel (4-0) @ Catholic (3-0), Wednesday 9/24

What would have been a meeting of undefeated teams turned out not to be, as Beth Tfiloh defeated Mount Carmel on Monday in a down-to-the-wire match (17-25, 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 16-14). The Warriors won the first, and then had to rally from being down 2-1 to force a fifth game, and won that one, 16-14.  Then, on Wednesday, Catholic handed the Cougars their second straight loss, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 26-24). Mount Carmel (5-2, 15) still holds a slim lead over Towson Catholic (4-2, 12) in the Gold Division, while Catholic (6-0, 18) controls the Red, far ahead of St. Frances (3-4, 9).

A Conference Tennis
Roland Park (2-0) @ Bryn Mawr (3-0), Monday 9/22
The last two unbeaten team in the A tennis race battled on Monday and Bryn Mawr came away with a 3-2 win, thanks in large part to Erica Choo’s 6-1, 6-3 upset win over Lindsay Katz in No. 1 singles.  Katz won the A Conference No. 1 singles title last year. The two teams meet again on 10/13.  Bryn Mawr is alone in first place (5-0, 15) while Roland Park is in second (4-1, 12), followed by NDP (2-2, 6) in third.

B Conference Tennis
Friends (2-0) @ St. Timothy’s (2-0), Friday 9/26

Match postponed due to rain.
