A young, rebuilding McDonogh
swimming team, which saw its 51 meet winning streak snapped two weeks ago by
Mount de Sales, regained championship form on Sunday, as the Eagles outscored
the Sailors, 475-432, to capture the A Conference team title at the 2008 IAAM
Swimming Championships, at UMBC. It was McDonogh’s sixth straight championship.
Also taking home the gold
yesterday was Archbishop Spalding, which routed the field in the B Conference.
In that recent dual meet
with Mount de Sales, the Sailors won on the strength of a win in the 11th race
of the day, the 400 yard free relay. It was the first regular-season loss for
McDonogh and Head Coach Scott Ward since the 2000-01 campaign.
“We talked after the dual
meet loss to Mount de Sales, and we realized that as a team we were going to
have to pick it up a notch,” said Ward. “I love this team. We were in a bit of
a rebuilding phase, but they’ve all worked hard since day one. I’m especially
proud of the ones who didn’t swim today; they poured their heart and soul into
it, and supported the ones who were out there.”
Brileigh Pinkney sparked the Eagles as she swam on two winning relays and won
individual titles in the 50 free-style and 100 breaststroke. Also winning
titles for the Eagles were Rebecca Flora (200 freestyle), Rachel Schaffer (200
individual medley) and Anna Schuster (100 freestyle), as the Eagles captured
first-place in seven of the 11 events.
Pinckney, only a junior,
reiterated the praise of her coach, almost word for word. “We won as a team.
Even the people who didn’t swim gave it their all in practice and their support
in the meet today. To beat Mount de Sales, we knew we had to give it our all.”
Mount de Sales finished with two champions, as Emily Dean won the 100
backstroke and Mattie Riley anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay.
Riley, who won the 100 free at last week's National Catholic championships,
came up short in her bid for IAAM title in the same event, as she placed second
to Pinkney.
Notre Dame Prep also had two champions, as the Blazers placed third overall in
the A Conference, with Jordan Paavola taking the 100 butterfly and Maggie Brown
capturing the 500 freestyle.
Spalding, which finished the regular season with a spotless record of 9-0, had
three individual champs, with Colleen Miller winning the 200 freestyle, Sarah
Edner taking the 100 freestyle and Lindsay Magaw outlasting the field in the
demanding 500 freestyle. The Cavaliers totaled 463 team points. Severn was a distant second with 295, just in front of John Carroll's 278.
"We have a great group
of swimmers this year. Almost all of our times, including our relay times, were
faster than in the past. We have done
exceptionally well in our league meets, which ended in another undefeated
season,” said Spalding Coach Kristen Koehler. “My expectations at the
Championship meet, as with any meet, was for every swimmer to swim their best.
The Championship meet provides an excellent opportunity for swimmers to
showcase their talents and see where they stand compared to other schools in
all of the leagues. I am excited that we not only won the 'B' Conference, but
that we proved to be fierce competitors with the 'A' Conference teams as well.
I am looking forward to what next year will bring."
