     It was a big day for Holmdel's cross country program, as the Hornets' boys and girls each delivered as pre-race favorites and captured Central Jersey Group II championships at Thompson County Park in Jamesburg. For the boys, George Galasso took second place with a 16:26 behind Somerville's Dan Stiles (16:19) and Rob Hoffman, Oliver Song and Sean Monga went 12-13-14 to help Holmdel hold off Red Bank, 60-64, in the team race. The Bucs had Matt Metlitz, Mike Kolodziej and John Arnone finish 3-4-5 to push the Hornets.
    Matawan took fourth and Point Boro was fifth on the boys side to advance to the Group Championships.
    In the girls CJ II race, Holmdel freshman Shannon Nelson finished in 19:28 to take second overall behind Delaware Valley's Julia Mark (19:07). Rumson-Fair Haven's Hannah Satzke was third, followed by Holmdel's Cathay Zhao in fourth and Manasquan's Racheal Honrath in fifth. The Hornets cruised to a 41-82 win over Rumson, with Matawan taking third to advance to the Group meet as well.
   The other boys team bringing home a championship was Jackson, which won the Central Jersey Group IV title, led by a sixth-place finish from Austin Santillo in 16:07, followed by Monroe Kearns in eighth, Ben Forrest in 11th and Ed McQuade in 14th to top Old Bridge 66-73 for the championship. As for the individuals in that race, Shore Conference champion Andrew Brodeur of Brick Memorial took second in 15:43 behind West Windsor South's Brian Leung (15:27), one of the top runners in the state. Manalapan's Robby Andrews was in third with a 15:49.
     The Central Jersey Group IV girls crown also went to a Shore Conference team, as Colts Neck pulled out a thrilling 69-70 win over rival Howell. As expected, Cougars junior Brianna Jackucewicz took home the individual title, running an 18:13, with Howell's Lindsay Lambert in fourth place in 18:37. Allison Linnell took sixth place overall for the Cougars, and the tandem of juniors Stephanie Olenik and Morgan Clark finished 24-25 to help Colts Neck nip the Rebels for the title.      One Shore Conference team took home a championship in South Jersey, as Toms River North's girls won 71-95 over Lenape in the South Jersey Group IV race at Delsea High School, led by a sixth-place finish by Angela Rugino (19:00) and a 12th-place finish by Andrea Mathis. In her first cross country season, Southern's Jillian Smith continues to impress as she took home the individual title by finishing in 18 minutes flat.
     Here are a few other highlights from around the Shore:
     Boys

     In Central Jersey Group I: Shore Regional finished second to Metuchen, 61-68, led by a sixth-place finish from junior Zach Collier. Point Beach's Shane Hart finished in 17:17 to take eighth place and move on to next week.
     In Central Jersey Group III: Middletown South's Shaun McGeever was the top local finisher in 14th place with a 17:10, and the Eagles finished third behind West Windsor North and Moorestown.
     In South Jersey Group II: Manchester's Chris Poss finished second overall with a 16:28 behind Haddonfield's Jon Vitez, who ran 16:13.
     In South Jersey Group III: Lacey's Philip Wood advanced to the Group meet with a 16:24 to finish 10th, and Lacey took fourth as a team.
     In South Jersey Group IV: Toms River North sophomore Joe Kotran helped the Mariners finish fifth by running a 16:28 to place 10th.
    Girls
    In Central Jersey Group III:
A young Middletown South team took second behind perennial power Hopewell Valley, 54-71, thanks to a 10th-place finish by freshman Grace Watters. Ocean's Danielle Tucholski was the top local finisher, taking fifth in 20:08.
    In Central Jersey Group I: Shore Regional's Brianna Amoroso took fifth in 21:13 to help the Blue Devils place third as a team.
    In South Jersey Group II: Barnegat finished second to perennial state power Haddonfield, 16-80, led by Lindsey Ray and Emily Olson, who finished 13-14 overall, respectively.
    In South Jersey Group III: Lacey's Catie McMahon moved on to the Group meet by taking fourth with a 19:31.
