Coaches of the Year
Karen Baldwin, Holmdel and JerriLyn Acevedo, Freehold. Both coaches brought history to programs that needed some. Both Holmdel and Freehold finished with the third-best record in its division, but then kicked its game into high gear come tournament time. The Hornets knocked off the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the Shore Conference Tournament to reach the semifinals as the No. 12 seed. Freehold nearly did the same from the No. 11 spot, toppling No. 6 St. John Vianney before falling to No. 3 Central. Once in the state playoffs, the two teams continued to roll, eventually claiming the first state sectional title in school history. Holmdel's win came via penalty strokes over Central Jersey Group II power Allentown, while Freehold took out Warren Hills in a tricky North Jersey Section 2, Group III bracket. Shockingly, Freehold was the last Shore Conference team playing, falling to eventual Tournament of Champions winner Shawnee in the Group III final.
Team of the Year
Shore. The Blue Devils finished 17-2-2, along the way picking up its ninth straight Shore Conference Tournament title. After suffering the first loss in school history to St. Rose, Shore regrouped and put together a nine-game winning streak that included the Shore Conference Tournament and North Jersey Section 2, Group I bracket. The Oak Knoll team that ended the Blue Devils' season with a 2-1 loss in the Group I semifinals went on to end the 209-game in-state unbeaten streak of Eastern in the Tournament of Champions semifinals.
