Tyler Biscaha turned the tables
on Charlie Frankel with a finals performance that he seemed in control
for most of the match by winning 6-1. Frankel advanced to the
finals in impressive action by beating Sean Brand 11-0. Brand
had to beat Kyle McNulty of Toms River North twice this weekend, including
a 5-1 decision in the third place bout, to punch his ticket to Atlantic
City.

Joey Langel is just fun to
watch! He hit a little “dance move” in the finals, as it was
called in the stands, for a takedown and showed us some funk in his
9-3 finals win over Mark Maestry. Langel was challenged in his
semifinals bout by Jackson Memorial’s Zach Huxford in a close 2-0
match. Maestry is a tough customer and gave it everything he had
this weekend, pinning Mike Berardesco in the semifinals. Berardesco
had a great performance from the seventh seed, beating Gene Accardi
twice to take third.

Vinnie DelleFave held off Mike
Morlaes in a bout that was closer than most thought it would be- this
one went into overtime with DelleFave recording the takedown to win
3-1. DelleFave recorded a major decision and technical fall to
reach the finals. Morales did reverse his previous outcome against
BJ Young in the semifinals with a 9-0 victory. Young persevered
and finished third, beating Long Branch’s Scott Festejo in the consolation
finals by pin.

John Morano outlasted Jordan
Beverly in the quarterfinals by a score of 7-4, which was one of the
best bouts of the weekend. Morano continued his run by defeating
Frank Labrusciano of Wall in the semifinals and then Derrick Russell
in the finals by a score of 4-2. Russell had a close semifinal
bout with Raritan’s Cody Mooney, squeaking out a 5-4 decision.
Beverly showed great resolve by storming through the consolation bracket
and beating Labrusciano for the third time this season to join teammates
Sean Brand and Skylar Engleken in Atlantic City.

Tough break for Cody Fobes,
as his high school career ended with him being unable to compete this
weekend due to illness. Zac Coulas won another region crown with
a solid performance against Mike Tancredi in the finals, winning by
a score of 8-3. Coulas advanced to the finals with a major decision
over Matawan’s Johnny Short. Tancredi wrestled very well this
weekend, getting past Ray Stathum of Long Branch again by a score of
7-3 in the semifinals. Jason Walters came from the four
seed to take third by beating Stathum and then Short, who beat him in
the quarterfinals, to take third.

Jimmy Somma became Colts Neck’s
first Region Champ in school history with a performance that not too
many saw coming. He beat Ryan McGilvray of Manalapan 6-2, who
beat him two previous times this season. He then followed that
up with a 1-0 win over top seed Billy Miller and then won in the finals
over Southern Regional’s Nick Maugeri by a score of 5-2. All
Maugeri did was knock off third seeded Matt Nobbs and then Justin Clarke
by pin to make the finals. Clarke reversed last week’s District
23 finals loss by beating Miller by a major decision to take third.

Karon Reid mad a statement
this weekend that the 140 state title runs through him, looking the
best that he has all season. He dominated previously unbeaten
Matt Frank in the semifinals with and 11-2 decision and then finally
beat his nemesis Jon Robertson in the finals 7-2. Robertson advanced
to the finals with a 3-2 decision over Raritan’s Bob Hornacek.
One of the more surprising stories of this weekend was Frank coming
in unbeaten and then not qualifying for the state tournament-
Charlie Croce held him off in a tight third place bout by a score of
1-0. Croce lost in the quarterfinals to Frank by a score of 6-2
and had to battle his way through the consolation bracket to get to
Atlantic City.

Sean Byrnes held his seed by
dominating in the quarterfinals and semifinals until until he had to
outlast Steve Santos by a score of 1-0. Santos beat Andrew Van
Dyk in the semifinals in another close one by a score of 2-1.
Van Dyk was pushed to the limits in the consolation bracket by having
to beat Southern Regional’s Frank Miele 3-2 in overtime and then falling
behind to Pineland’s Rob Semprevivo before taking the lead and pinning
him to take third place.

Nick Menditto cruised to his
first region title with a 7-1 victory over Brian Broderick in the finals.
Broderick got to the finlas by a 4-1 victory over Brick Memorial’
Chris Giannos. Justin Molzon beat Giannos 4-2 in the consolation
semi’s and then reversed his Friday night loss to Nick Visicaro with
a 1-0 decision in the third place bout to extend his season another
week.

Scott Winston put on a takedown
clinic this weekend by a technical fall in the quarterfinals, a 19-8
decision in the semifinals, and then another technical fall in the finals
over Jason Ecklof for the second straight week. After a close
quarterfinal bout, Ecklof turned it on with an 8-1 victory over Brick
Memorial’s Cody Oliverio before falling to Winston. Joe Favia
rebounded from his semifinals loss to Winston by qualifying for the
state tournament by defeating St. John Vianney’s Tom Kevlin 5-3.

Not much drama in the finals
as Dan Seidenberg won by forfeit as Skylar Engleken injured his ankle
during his 9-7 semifinal victory over Justin Persico. Seidenberg
looked very impressive throughout the tournament with two technical
falls to get into the finals. Persico made a nice run to third
place by pinning Bryan Sternlieb and then beating Mike Kiley of Brick
Memorial by a major decision to head on down to Atlantic City.

Brian Newman was in control
for most of the weekend, capping off his tournament with a 9-3 win over
John Battista in the finals. Battista reversed last weekend’s
district loss to Billy Geroge by beating him in the semifinals in a
4-1 match. George bounced back and beat Brick Memorial’s Billy
Miller for the second time in two weeks to take third place by a score
of 3-0.

A very dominating performance
by Glenn Carson. He went through this tournament with a pin, technical
fall, and then a 17-6 decision in the finals over surprise finalist
Kevin Docherty. Docherty had a 4 OT victory over Ocean Township’s
Ricky Lyster and was trailing Freehold Boro’s Josh Davis in the semifinals
before pinning him to advance to the finals. Curtis Kelly lost
in the quarterfinals to Wall’s Dave Janssen and wrestled all the way
back for third by pinning Tim Tomaino to seal his reservations for Atlantic
City.

Harry Turner used his speed
and was strong enough to roll with the big boys. He did his best
Scott Winston impersonation by playing the takedown game against Ameer
Washington in the finals with a 13-7 decision. Washington beat
Jimmy Lawson in a tight semifinal bout by a 3-2 score. Lawson
ran through the consolation rounds, wrestling only 34 seconds in two
matches. He beat Keansburg’s Rich Roser by fall in 23 seconds,
and then finished his run to Atlantic City with an 11 second pin over
Lakewood’s Louis Brown.
