This coming Wednesday, May 14, wrestlers from around the Shore Conference and the state of New Jersey will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train with a wrestling legend.
Eric Guerrero, a three-time NCAA national champion at Oklahoma State University and 2004 United States Olympian, will be at Rhino Wrestling in Wall to conduct a special one-day clinic with former teammate and Rhino Wrestling's head instructor, Mike Malinconico. Space is limited to the first 60 wrestlers and will cost $30 per wrestler for the two-hour session that will run from 4 to 6 p.m. Currently, Guerrero is in his fourth year as an assistant for the Cowboys and has played a key role in four of OSU's NCAA team championships and five of the Cowboys' Big 12 team titles. During his time as an assistant he has coached seven wrestlers to national championships, including five in 2005.
His own wrestling career is just as distinguished, as he captured individual championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and was a four-time All-American. He finished his career with a 117-13 record that was highlighted by a perfect 31-0 record his senior year in which he recorded a fall, 12 technical falls and seven major decisions. He is one of just 10 four-time All-Americans in the decorated history of Oklahoma State wrestling. Additionally, he was recognized as a two-time Academic All-American. Guerrero also has a wealth of international experience and success. The San Jose, Calif. native won four U.S. Open Championships from 2001-2004, a World Cup title in 2003 and represented the U.S. at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
"We've kept in contact over the last couple of years and have been making plans for him to come out here," Malinconico said. "I worked out with him in college when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore and the running score is probably 170-0 in his favor. His technique is incredible and he has the fastest feet I've ever seen in my life. And he's very articulate and can pass those skills along to others. If my kids can take just a fraction of what he knows it will be well worth it."
This is an opportunity that should not be missed by any wrestler of any age, as Rhino Wrestling will welcome one of the top U.S. wrestlers if the 90s to share his great knowledge with grapplers of all ages and skill levels.
