VHSCA Softball Team

Several Central Region stars honored

James River's Caitlin McGowan, Hanover's Lauren Brummell, Patrick Henry's Kami Nuckols and Midlothian's Brittany Blankenship earned first-team softball honors for the Group AAA Virginia High School Coaches Association.

Midlothian coach Denise Manuel took coach-of-the-year honors.

Brummell, who led the Hawks to the Central Region title and the state final, was one of four Hawks honored.

Courtney Long and Jessie Atkinson raked in second-team bids, and Julie Smith received an honorable mention.

Sammy Dow made it three Trojans to be honored, also receiving an honorable mention.

Before Julie Smith heads off to James Madison to continue her career, she nabbed an honorable mention though her senior year was injury-plagued.
